My daughter just got her hair cut and colored for “back-to-school” and it got me wondering about what sort of hairstyles we are going to see people wearing this fall. My daughter chose an “Emo” style (for those of you who haven’t heard of Emo, it’s an edgy style that I like to call “goth-lite”). Her hair is long in the back and underneath on the sides with lots of short layers up through. The long layer underneath is dyed red and the bangs are styled like an extreme comb-over. Believe it or not, this is actually very cute on her but I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone over the age of 21. It’s definitely a very young look.
Very long hair is making a comeback but think Jennifer Lopez, not Crystal Gayle. If you have the hair for this look, you’ll want lots of long layers with some height at the crown. It’s a softer, flowing look that can be loose and beachy or twisted into an up-do for a more sophisticated style.
The braid craze is expected to continue into fall. The “milkmaid” braid, which is one that wraps around the entire head like a headband with no hair left down, is going to be popular. Also, unstructured and messy-looking braids are hot right now.
If you don’t have long hair, and aren’t crazy about the Emo look, then perhaps you might try blunt bangs or the pixie. These styles are back again only with a slightly softer cut. The blunt bangs are shaped more to be a bit less harsh and the pixie is being worn longer at the top for more versatility. If you are thinking of trying one of these styles you will want to have a discussion with your stylist first as both of these looks will bring stark attention to the facial features and will be most flattering on women who have sharp, symmetrical features.
Myself, I am known to be in a constant state of change when it comes to my hair. I get bored easily and crave something new. (A few of my “greatest hits” are posted with this article, just to give you something to smile about.) However, I highly recommend you think carefully before you jump into a new style. There’s nothing worse than a bad haircut and it can be easily avoided if you have an honest discussion with your stylist before the snipping begins.
