Life’s Anecdotes: Giving your child the finger?

Life’s Anecdotes

By Niki Look

Life is full of experiences some good, and some not so good. I believe that if you look really close you can take something from every situation and grow from it. Life’s Anecdotes will take you through the journey of my life and what I have learned, hope you enjoy and please feel free to share the link with others!     ~ Niki~

Have you ever…

Thought about giving your child the finger? I know it sounds silly but let’s be honest! When your unruly teen is standing there toe to toe with you screaming about why life is so rough and she is so stressed out because she has black mascara instead of brown….tell me haven’t you ever had the urge as you are walking away, to just turn and give them the finger?

I know it sounds silly but in today’s society children have lost the need to show adults respect.  When I was growing up we showed respect, because if not you wouldn’t be sitting down at dinner for a very long time! During our struggle with teaching today’s youth the importance of treating yourself and others with respect we have led them to believe that they are equals from birth! Although I understand the importance of what we are trying to accomplish here; I do not believe that teaching by instilling fear is productive, there has to be some sort of happy medium.

So you ask what is that “medium”? I really can’t give you the answers because I wish I knew them myself, the only thing I can say is, treat them as you would want to be treated, love them as you would want to be loved and someday it will hopefully come full circle. And if that doesn’t work you can give them the finger in the heat of an argument…but trust me…the reason why I know this doesn’t work is because I actually did it! Oh yes I gave her the finger and it didn’t solve a thing except give me the wisdom to write why NOT to give your child the finger…even if they deserve it!

Have you ever…

thought that parents should be allowed to drink while they drive with a child who holds a learners permit? Although dangerous, I think it would be helpful to the parent!  The first thing I want to do is overreact when she gets behind the wheel. It is a very natural reaction for any parent to overreact; after all you are riding on the end of a speeding bullet driven by a hormonal basket case!

I am here to tell you, don’t worry because your child already knows it all, and they sure damn well tell you so! So I guess the only comforting words of wisdom I can offer is try to remember that whatever driving skills you show them in everyday life they will display to you while you are in the passenger seat. So when your child is in its car seat and you are screaming at the guy who just cut you off in the Hannaford parking lot, or when you take the corner on two wheels because you are late for work…just remember they never forget and someday they will be repeating your disastrous mistakes. Unfortunately they will drive exactly like you, so you are the one who can make the choice whether they will be the one to drive the car pool or the one to ride in the car pool.

Every year people from far and wide come to celebrate the birth of a small town called Milbridge Maine. For the past two years The Good News Ladies have organized and sponsored this truly amazing community event. This years theme, a Luau, proved to be as spectacular as it sounds. Grass skirts and lei’s lined the streets of this beautiful coastal town.

There are many events that take place but the most memorable has to be the Codfish relay. Teams of four race through a water hose dressed in full fishing attire carrying a dead “ripe” codfish… all for bragging rights. The Good News Ladies pulled a team together and took part in this historical event, they did not win but once again proved they are not afraid to try anything once!

Its the Good News Girls UNLEASHED! Nikki and Grace (the masterminds behind the Good News Paper) have decided to attempt their hands at different Maine activities. Let me tell you first of all that you have never met two more unique personalities as those with Nikki and Grace. They really do know how to a have fun, and most of all, enjoy life. This month the girls tried their hand on the good ol’ Maine clam flats. They attempted clamming. (Laugh out Loud!) I say attempted because… well, you’ll just have to see for yourselves. Kudos to you girls, I wish I could have joined you… this looked entirely fun, and it’s reminded me to give you this advice: When walking over the clam flats, walk quickly, that is the ONLY way to NOT get stuck! Now, I gotta run… I’m gonna go check that out again, I got my tissues handy! You girls did a great job, it’s not easy, as the video will prove! But after clam digging, what’s your next experiment? We’ll all just have to wait and see… I, for one, can’t!
